ETHNOGRAPHIC FIELD METHODS: THE PERUVIAN AMAZON

Explore Biological and Cultural Diversity Where the Andes Meet the Amazon

The Upper Amazon is conceptualized as a series of places through which students will learn about one of the world's most culturally and biologically diverse regions. Through immersion in indigenous, mestizo, and urban community development projects, and excursions into the selva alta--high jungle--and the selva baja--low jungle, undergraduate and graduate students will learn how anthropologists collect and analyze qualitative and quantitative data. This hands on approach to ethnographic and ethnological methods will engage students in the study of ritual life, contemporary shamanism, health, community organization, politics, and social change.
