Biography —
Dr. Carlton Shield Chief Gover, a citizen of the Pawnee Nation, is an Assistant Professor of Anthropology and Assistant Curator of Archaeology at the University of Kansas. He also holds affiliate appointments in the Museum Studies and Indigenous Studies Programs. He earned his Ph.D. in Anthropology from the University of Colorado Boulder, where his dissertation, The Seeds of Ethnogenesis, examined the formation of Central Great Plains Towns through Indigenous perspectives and advanced chronological modeling.
Dr. Shield Chief Gover’s research centers on Great Plains archaeology, Indigenous archaeology, and the integration of oral traditions with archaeological science. His publications include co-editing Indigenizing Archaeology (University of Florida Press) and co-authoring the Science article “Early Dispersal of Domestic Horses into the Great Plains and Northern Rockies,” which was awarded the AAAS Newcomb Cleveland Prize.
He currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Plains Anthropological Society as Chair of both the Native American Student Award and Sensitive Image Policy Committees. He is Co-Chair of the Society for American Archaeology’s Committee on Native American Relations.
